About me

My name is Brandi and I am a former professional gardener and current ISA Certified Arborist® with over 20 years of organic gardening experience. I want to help you become a successful ecological gardener also by sharing the knowledge I have gained through many seasons of experience and my unique education in prairie ecology and soil science.

The mission of Burlwood Acre is to empower folks like you to grow and advocate for gardens that are better for the environment. Whether you are new to gardening or just looking for better quality information, my goal is to give you vetted and experience backed information to grow successful, climate friendly gardens of all types: vegetable, herb, habitat gardens, orchards, trees, and community gardens.

Why Burlwood Acre? The name honors the dozen nearly 100 year-old fruit trees circling our house on our single acre of land. They are old, gnarly, full of character and give us and our little community delicious local fruit. A gift from the trees, bees, and the generation that came before us. No shipping. No pesticides. No profits. We have made dried apple and pear rings, apple and pear sauce, pies, and a real treat – apple molasses. Burls are unique growths in trees where the grain twists and swirls into beautiful patterns resembling tiny ocean currents. They are beautiful examples of the art of resilience.

I love plants. I love soils. I believe in the power of photosynthesis and the storage capacity of soils to right what we humans have gotten wrong.
